Panorámica de Planes

The municipality of Planes is located in a valley that shares its name within the district of El Comtat. It has a population of 812 (up to 01/01/2006) and its inhabitants are known as Planeros. It has a total surface area of 385.5 square kilometres, which is 445 metres above sea level.

Planes borders with the Cantalar mountains range to the north; the Albureca mountain range to the northeast; Xarpolar in the east and the Almudaina mountains in the south. Its highest point is the Peñas del Alto de Benialfaquí, which is 1000 metres above sea level. The township includes the two urban zones of the town itself as well as the nearby villages of Benialfaquí, Catamarruc and Margarida.

Ermita del Santo Cristo

The Santo Cristo chapel. The attractive town of Planes, with its narrow stepped streets, which hug the contours of the topography, is situated at the foot of a twelfth century castle. The sierra of San Cristobal is right behind it. It has the only existing menhir, huge upright stone dating from pre-historic times, in the whole region of Valencia. The menhir has a via crucis on it, or way of the cross, to guide visitors to the sturdily built hermitage chapel of Santo Cristo, which was constructed in 1850 and is still very well cared for. It has five paintings by unknown painters and an image of the Santo Cristo, which was donated to the chapel by a nun from the Santa Tecla convent in Valencia in 1749 and was destroyed during the civil war. Subsequently, there was a replica made  that actually presides over the altar.

Acueducto de Planes

The Planes aqueduct. This striking Gothic/Renaissance aqueduct is situated on the outskirts of the town. It was designed to carry water over the existing waterway in Barranco Hondo. It forms part of a water network that includes two old water mills and the spring in Fuente de Oro.

The chapel known as Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the 17th century and was named precisely after this religious figure.  Nevertheless, its apse, or semicircular termination, indicates that it was perhaps built on the remains of an older chapel or mosque. It has a particularly interesting prismatic tower built in the form of a cross with four sections without a capita and unfinished.

Planes Castle. The castle is 2,887.5 square metres and is comprised of eight towers on a rectangular base with a large gap between water tank built onto it on the east wall. It was constructed during the end of the Castillo de Planes

12th  and beginning of the13th centuries over Bronze Age remains and formed part of king Jaime I’s feudal ownership in 1245. The king’s feudal subjects sheltered in it in times of siege or whilst under attack along with their animals and belongings. It is presently in a state of disrepair but both national and provincial authorities have approved measures to subsidize reconstruction work for it.

The climate in the Planes valley is typical of the interior of Mediterranean countries and the most common agricultural crops are cherries, olives and almonds. Farm livestock is mostly comprised of sheep and goats.

There are two streams in Planes that flow into the Serpis River (and the Beniarres reservoir) located in Barranco de la Encantada and Barranco Hondo.

Barranco de la Encantada is a very picturesque area and it has a number of pools that are quite suitable for bathing.  It is very well frequented. There is a walk along the riverside that follows the route to La Encantada and then heads off towards the old trout farm along the Barranco del Carló after Toll de l’Estret.
